How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work?
HBOT isn't about breathing 'more air' — it's about dissolving far more oxygen directly into your blood plasma so it can reach tissue your blood vessels can't. Here's the biology, in plain language.

The basic idea: oxygen under pressure
At sea level, almost all the oxygen you breathe is carried on hemoglobin inside your red blood cells, which are usually close to fully loaded. Breathing extra oxygen at normal pressure doesn't add much. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy changes two variables at once: you breathe 100% oxygen, and you do it inside a chamber pressurized to 2.0–2.5 times normal atmospheric pressure. Under those conditions, a large amount of oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma — the fluid part of blood — independent of your red cells.
Why dissolved plasma oxygen matters
Plasma can flow into places red blood cells struggle to reach: swollen tissue, areas with damaged or narrowed vessels, and the edges of a wound where circulation has broken down. By saturating plasma with oxygen, HBOT delivers oxygen to tissue that is effectively oxygen-starved even when the rest of the body is fine. Oxygen is a raw material for healing, so restoring it where it's missing is often the step that lets stalled repair restart.
What that oxygen actually does
Once oxygen reaches oxygen-starved tissue, several repair processes pick back up:
- Fibroblasts build collagen — the scaffold wounds need to close
- New capillaries form (angiogenesis), restoring lasting blood supply
- White blood cells kill bacteria more effectively in an oxygen-rich environment
- Swelling (edema) is reduced, easing pressure on injured tissue
A single session, step by step
A treatment runs about two hours from arrival to departure. You change into cotton scrubs, settle into the chamber, and the pressure rises gradually over 10–15 minutes — most people feel only mild ear fullness, like an airplane descent. You then spend roughly 90 minutes at treatment pressure breathing oxygen, often reading, watching a movie, or napping. Decompression takes another 10–15 minutes. Most conditions need a course of sessions, not a single visit.
Why the type of chamber matters
The effects above depend on reaching true treatment pressure. HBOTQ uses hard-shell, medical-grade chambers operating at 2.0–2.5 ATA — the pressures supported by clinical evidence and required for FDA-approved indications. The low-pressure 'soft' chambers sold for home or spa wellness don't reach these pressures and don't meet the medical standard for the conditions we treat.
