Hard vs. Soft Hyperbaric Chambers: Why It Matters
Not all hyperbaric chambers are equal — and the difference isn't cosmetic. The pressure a chamber reaches determines whether it can deliver the biological effects that make HBOT work for medical conditions. Here's what you need to know.

The pressure is the point
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by dissolving far more oxygen into your blood plasma than is possible at normal atmospheric pressure. The key word is pressure — and there is a large gap between the pressure a medical-grade hard-shell chamber reaches and what a soft-sided chamber can achieve.
- Hard-shell chambers: 2.0–2.5 ATA (two to two-and-a-half times normal atmospheric pressure)
- Soft-sided chambers: 1.3–1.5 ATA (30–50% above normal pressure)
- The biological effects that matter — angiogenesis, white-cell killing power, fibroblast activity — activate at medical treatment pressures
What soft chambers can and can't do
Soft-sided chambers are sometimes marketed as "mild hyperbaric" therapy. At 1.3–1.5 ATA breathing ambient air or slightly enriched oxygen, you do get a modest increase in dissolved oxygen. Some people find them relaxing. But they do not reach the pressure at which the clinical evidence for wound healing, radiation injury, sudden hearing loss, and other FDA-approved indications was established — and they cannot be used to satisfy the criteria for insurance-covered treatment.
What to ask any HBOT provider
Before committing to a course of treatment anywhere, ask these questions:
- What chamber type do you use — hard-shell or soft-sided?
- What pressure do you treat at (in ATA)?
- Is a physician supervising my case, or just a technician?
- Will my insurer cover this, and can you handle pre-authorization?
